Metro Vancouver

HTL Explainer

Metro Vancouver approached me with a unique topic for an animation: a brand new system in solid waste management that would convert biomass into fuel. This system, called hydrothermal liquefaction (or HTL) was still in its early stages, so an animation was commissioned to demystify the process for a broad audience. The video needed to establish the current solid waste problems facing the region, how HTL solves that problem, how it works mechanically, and what it could mean if this system was implement on a large scale.

A clean and vibrant isometric illustration style kept the video feeling clean and vibrant, but to really engage the viewers we had fun hooking people in with the idea that poop could become jet fuel. A toilet gas pump fueling a commercial aircraft was a lot of fun to pitch and even more fun to animate.
